In just 6 months I have learned more about business than in the past 22 years. My secret? Marriage. Here are just a few lessons I have learned so far:
Don’t Lose Focus
The minute I stop paying attention to my wife, trouble comes. It takes constant awareness to have a successful relationship. My wife does not tell me if I’m not paying attention to her, nor should she. It is my responsibility to show love and respect to her above all other things. Just like my wife, my customers don’t tell me I’m not giving them the attention they need, nor should they. It is my responsibility to communicate and give respect to all of my customers.
Laugh a Lot
Laughter is the best medicine, and no matter what happens between us, my wife and I can always laugh and make each other smile. This is what keeps us sane. The same for my customers: It’s important to laugh and not take everything so seriously. Telling jokes and laughing about my mistakes brings me joy. Remember, business is personal.
Never Stop Learning
When a man is trying to win the heart of a woman, he studies her. He learns her likes, dislikes, habits, and hobbies. But after he wins her heart and marries her, he often stops learning about her. If the amount he studied her before marriage was equal to a high school degree, he should continue to learn about her until he gains a college degree, a masters’ degree, and ultimately a doctorate degree. It is a lifelong journey that draws his heart ever closer to hers. – Fireproof
I know this makes sense from a marriage stand point, but do I care this much about my customers? If I’m trying to get a new customer, I might learn about their family, or see what hobbies they have so I might connect and land a sale. But do I genuinely care about them after we’ve “tied the knot”? I feel like I just received my high school diploma for my wife, but how would I rank myself with my customers?
Marriage is a relationship. One that has taught me about focus, laughter, and learning. I hope this inspires you to create a higher standard in your marriage and business.
